Niagara Purple Eagles vs. Michigan St Spartans Pick & Prediction NOVEMBER 7th 2024
Preview and Prediction
The excitement and nerves of the first game of the season have passed for Niagara and Michigan State, so now the teams will aim to settle in as they face off on Thursday in East Lansing, Michigan.
Both teams are coming off of wins on Monday.
Michigan State secured an 81-57 victory at home against Monmouth, pulling away in the final minutes after the Hawks had closed the gap to within 10 points with just under 12 minutes remaining.
For the Spartans, Jaden Akins had a strong season debut after struggling during the offseason and preseason.
Akins recorded 23 points, nine rebounds, five assists, and only one turnover, and his performance will be crucial in determining Michigan State's success this season.
"I was surprised by what happened at the end of the summer and in the fall," said Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo. "He and I met this week. I think he's putting too much pressure on himself. Nobody works harder than him, so I know he spends an excessive amount of time on his game."
Meanwhile, Niagara kicked off their season with a 100-65 victory over Division III Houghton. Seven players for the Purple Eagles scored in double figures, with Jahari Williamson leading the way with 16 points.
Former Duke player Greg Paulus is in his sixth year as coach of Niagara and has a completely new roster this season, including 10 transfers.
Niagara was predicted to finish eighth out of 13 teams in the preseason MAAC coaches poll and did not have a player named to the MAAC's preseason all-league teams.
However, Paulus was pleased with the balance his team displayed in their first game.
"For us, there is a lot of versatility on this team," he said. "Different players can step up on different nights. We will be at our best when we have balanced scoring across the board and when we share the ball."
